Empower your community masterclass at the Social Impact in the Regions Conference
We were delighted to participate in the Social Impact in the Regions Conference, where Meaghan Burkett and Sam Doove joined Dr. Dimity Podger in Kempsey for an inspiring session on community-driven economic change.
In our Empower Your Community masterclass, we guided participants through practical ways to build local ownership, finance, and community-led development. Attendees explored strategies for building local sources of finance, creating community enterprises, managing local assets, and building systems for place based capital. It was an inspiring session, filled with actionable insights and success stories to drive prosperous futures! For more information contact [email protected].
Inspiration Session with Mandy Walker
Last week, Mandy Walker joined us for our inspiration session. Mandy has many valuable and personal Place Based Capital stories that we can learn from, such as:
- Where and how she was able to access capital to scale their business after the banks and traditional finance knocked them back;
- Why and how she co-invested in the local pub alongside her community to retain this community asset;
- Why and how she is starting up a cooperative to enable small businesses to access larger contracts with Australia’s Defence Force.

Upcoming Inspiration Session
Looking ahead, we’ve got another engaging Inspiration Session on the horizon. Ian Bird, CEO of Community Foundations Australia, and Meaghan Burkett, Place Based Capital lead at Ethical Fields, will join Jacqueline McArthur for a thought-provoking conversation about community philanthropy, community wealth building and place based capital in Australia.
Ian hit the road and the airports this year, new in his role, to understand better how community led philanthropy works in Australia and he found some interesting strengths and weaknesses in the way we do things here, Meaghan spent twelve months traveling to metro and regional places across Australia diving deep into place based capital and community asset ownership and leadership with local leaders. Both bring valuable stories and experiences to the table. Both have a huge amount to share.
